For several years, the CD-ROM that came with the second edition of Unix System Administration Handbook was also sold separately under the name Tools for Unix System Administrators, so that USAH readers could obtain updates. This CD-ROM is no longer available; the last version was released in October, 1997. The third edition of USAH does not include a CD-ROM.

Although the contents of the CD-ROM are long out of date, the descriptive "index" files for each package are reproduced here for readers who would like to use them as a starting point in attempting to track down the current version of each package.

In 1997, most software was still distributed by FTP. Today, packages under active development usually have web pages. Search engines and web directories such as www.google.com and www.yahoo.com should be able to turn up a pointer to active projects very quickly.

The following list gives short descriptions of most of the software that was included on the TUSA CD-ROM. Not everything is listed here; for example, the GNU distribution includes more than 125 packages that are not listed separately.
